WA Avocados Make Their Mark in India

Western Australian avocados have officially made their mark in India, with the Cook Government celebrating the successful entry into this lucrative export market.

Over 320 tonnes of WA avocados, valued at $1.6 million, have been shipped to India by sea, with the majority sourced from Delroy Orchards in the Southern Forests region. The first commercial consignment arrived late last year, following the removal of a 30% tariff on Australian Hass avocados as part of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA).

Agriculture and Food Minister Jackie Jarvis said, “We are working hard alongside industry to position WA as a leading exporter of avocados globally. International trade promotions like this allow us to attract new customers and help WA farmers thrive. More exports mean more jobs and stronger regional economies.”

Jane Kelsbie, Warren-Blackwood MLA, commented, “Delroy Orchards has paved the way for WA’s avocado success in India. Our avocados are among the best in the world, and I am committed to helping producers in my electorate tap into new markets and strengthen our economy.”

Robyn Clarke, Murray-Wellington MLA, stated, “I look forward to the continued growth of WA’s avocado exports and the jobs it will create in Waroona. It’s an honor to be part of a Government that supports primary industries and prioritizes job creation.”

Currently, Delroy Orchards’ fruit is packed in Donnybrook, with plans to expand operations to a new packing facility in Waroona, which will support job creation in the region.

The demand for premium WA avocados continues to rise across India, the Middle East, and Asia, driven by their superior appearance, creamy texture, flavor, and high quality. Avocados are now the highest-value fruit crop in Western Australia, with production reaching a record 65,000 tonnes in 2023-24. Production is expected to grow further as orchards in Gingin, Carabooda, Busselton, Manjimup, and Pemberton reach full maturity over the next five years.

The Cook Government is currently supporting a nine-day trade promotion in India, showcasing WA’s home-grown avocados at events in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The initiative, led by Avocados Australia and the Australian Government, with support from the WA Government, follows the success of trial shipments by WA growers. Alongside trade events, a study tour will help establish new relationships and unlock additional market opportunities.

This campaign exemplifies the Cook Government’s commitment to diversifying Western Australia’s economy by expanding international markets for local produce.
