Victoria’s Strategic Partnership with India for Mutual Growth

Victoria and India share a unique bond founded on cooperation and mutual values, which has deepened since the launch of Victoria’s India Strategy: Our Shared Future in 2018. This relationship is a top priority for Victoria, as both economies and societies complement each other. In the fiscal year 2023-24, two-way merchandise trade between Victoria and India reached nearly $3.7 billion, marking India as one of Victoria’s largest trading partners. Additionally, Victoria is home to the largest Indian diaspora in Australia, comprising 38% of the total Indian population in the country.

The strong people-to-people ties, fueled by a shared love for food and sports, serve as the foundation of this partnership. Since the implementation of the 2018 Strategy, there have been significant achievements, including an increase in student enrollment, the success of creative events, and enhanced collaboration in sectors such as innovation, food and agribusiness, and tourism.

However, the global landscape has evolved since 2018, prompting a reassessment of domestic priorities and bilateral relationships. To strengthen these ties, Victoria is refreshing its India Strategy for 2025-30, aimed at fostering deeper connections and achieving mutual prosperity.

The new strategy focuses on three key objectives over the next five years:

Strengthening Connections: Promoting a meaningful and inclusive relationship with India.

Enhancing Economic Cooperation: Fostering strategic economic collaboration for mutual benefit.

Deepening Knowledge Ties: Expanding education, innovation, and technology partnerships to cultivate a vibrant knowledge economy.

Since 2018, Victoria has refined its focus on areas of established strength, including high-quality food and fiber, robust educational institutions, digital and tech talent, and diverse tourism offerings. Additionally, there is a commitment to advancing connections in creative and sports industries while addressing sustainability challenges.

The vision is clear: to further connect Victoria and India at both the state and personal levels, fostering collaboration that empowers growth and innovation.
