
Australia’s Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, Andrew Charlton, visited New Delhi from 18 to 20 February 2026 to participate in the India AI Impact Summit, reinforcing the growing science, technology and innovation partnership between Australia and India.
During the summit, Minister Charlton delivered a keynote address highlighting the importance of ensuring that the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence reflects the interests of workers and society. He emphasized the need to elevate the voices of workers as AI technologies transform industries and workplaces, while also promoting Australia as a partner of choice for investment in sustainable AI infrastructure and safe, inclusive AI innovation.
On the sidelines of the summit, the Assistant Minister engaged in discussions with counterparts from India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada to explore opportunities for deeper international cooperation in emerging technologies. He also met with leading global technology companies to discuss investment opportunities within Australia’s expanding AI ecosystem.
A key highlight of the summit was the launch of the Australian Government Pavilion by Minister Charlton. The pavilion showcased innovative Australian companies working in advanced technologies and strategic sectors, demonstrating Australia’s growing capabilities in artificial intelligence, digital technologies and research-driven innovation.
The visit also marked the 20th anniversary of the Australia–India Strategic Research Fund, a flagship bilateral initiative launched in 2006 to support collaborative scientific research between the two countries. The program has funded numerous joint research projects across fields such as biotechnology, renewable energy, advanced materials and emerging technologies.
During his visit, Minister Charlton held talks with Jitendra Singh, India’s Minister for Science and Technology. The two ministers reviewed the progress of the Australia–India Strategic Research Fund and welcomed the finalization of five new collaborative projects under Round 16 of the initiative.
Both sides also acknowledged the significant potential for closer cooperation across the space sector, including partnerships between national space agencies, research institutions and private enterprises throughout the space value chain.
Minister Charlton’s visit underscored the strengthening strategic partnership between Australia and India in science, technology and innovation, highlighting a shared commitment to advancing research collaboration, responsible AI development and emerging technology cooperation for mutual economic growth.
