Australia is set to once again take centre stage in global sport as the 2026 Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) kicks off in Sydney this October. Reinforcing its commitment to delivering a world-class sporting spectacle, the Albanese Government has announced a $12.4 million investment to support the planning, logistics, and successful delivery of the tournament.
The funding will help facilitate the event across nine host cities spanning Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, highlighting the tournament’s strong regional significance and international appeal.
The 2026 RLWC will feature standalone men’s, women’s, and wheelchair tournaments, bringing together 26 teams from 16 nations to compete in 51 matches over five weeks. One of the tournament’s key highlights will be a series of double-header fixtures, where men’s and women’s teams will share the stage, offering fans an exciting and inclusive sporting experience while showcasing the very best of rugby league to global audiences.
A major focus of the government’s investment is strengthening the women’s competition, reflecting the rapid growth of women’s rugby league in recent years. The initiative aims to further encourage participation among women and girls while inspiring the next generation of athletes.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the broader social and economic impact of the event, stating that the World Cup would not only deliver packed stadiums and local jobs but also create unforgettable memories for communities across the region. He noted that the tournament would strengthen ties between Australia, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand while reinforcing Australia’s reputation as a premier destination for international sporting events.
Anika Wells, Australia’s Minister for Sport, said the investment would help deliver an exceptional tournament in the lead-up to the 2032 Summer Olympics. She added that the event would create greater opportunities for grassroots participation, particularly among young athletes, and serve as a powerful platform to inspire more women and girls to take up sport.
As Australia prepares to host the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the 2026 Rugby League World Cup represents another milestone in the nation’s sporting journey. Beyond the excitement on the field, the tournament is expected to deliver significant economic benefits, strengthen regional cooperation, and further cement Australia’s standing as a global leader in hosting major international sporting events.
