Australia–India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) continues to deepen bilateral economic engagement, with Australia’s mining technology sector emerging as a key beneficiary.
Australian company Mineral Technologies is leveraging the agreement to expand its presence in India, supporting the country’s ambition to develop a robust domestic critical minerals and mineral sands industry. The company’s advanced mineral-processing equipment, designed in Australia, enhances mineral recovery while significantly reducing energy and water consumption—aligning with India’s sustainability and industrial efficiency goals.
A major catalyst for this growth has been the elimination of tariffs under AI-ECTA. Previously subject to duties ranging from 8% to 11%, exports of Australian mining equipment now enjoy zero tariffs, creating a strong competitive advantage.
“The zero tariff is a big advantage,” said Vasim Pradhan, Director for Sales and Operations (Asia). “It allows us to pass cost benefits directly to Indian customers while strengthening our commercial position in this important market.”
The agreement has not only facilitated trade flows but also reinforced institutional collaboration. Support from Austrade has played a pivotal role in enabling Australian businesses to navigate India’s complex market landscape and expand across Asia. Through strategic introductions, market intelligence and participation in key industry platforms, Austrade continues to act as a bridge between the two economies.
Strengthening Industrial Partnerships
India has emerged as a strategic hub for Mineral Technologies’ regional operations. Since entering the Indian market in 1990, the company has steadily built long-term partnerships with both public and private sector enterprises.
Key collaborations include projects with IREL (India) Limited in Kerala and Odisha, as well as with private sector players such as Trimex Sands Pvt Ltd. These partnerships have enabled the transfer of advanced Australian technologies while supporting local employment and capability development in mineral processing.
The company also supplies technology solutions to major industrial clients, including global glass manufacturers such as Saint-Gobain and Asahi Glass, further strengthening industrial linkages between the two nations.
Driving the Critical Minerals Agenda
The growing cooperation in mining technology aligns with broader strategic priorities of both countries, particularly in the critical minerals sector. As India seeks to secure supply chains and enhance domestic processing capabilities, Australian expertise is playing an increasingly important role.
Mineral Technologies’ innovations, including AI-enabled digital solutions for real-time process optimisation, are helping Indian operators improve efficiency, reduce waste and enhance productivity. These advancements underscore the role of technology-driven trade in elevating bilateral cooperation beyond traditional commodity exchanges.
Expanding Economic Engagement
With India positioned as a gateway to broader Asian markets, the company is exploring further investments, including the potential establishment of an advanced process laboratory in India. This facility would support regional feasibility analysis and reinforce India’s status as a strategic operations hub.
The success of Mineral Technologies highlights how AI-ECTA is evolving into a cornerstone of Australia–India economic relations. By enabling seamless trade, fostering technology transfer and encouraging industrial collaboration, the agreement is paving the way for deeper engagement in high-value sectors.
As both nations continue to prioritise critical minerals, sustainability and advanced manufacturing, partnerships like these are expected to play a defining role in shaping the future of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
